When Should I Take (Beef & Bison) Liver Supplements?

This is a frequently asked question, and the answer isn’t entirely straight-forward. Is there a best time to take beef or bison liver supplements? When?

1) The Morning

I have friends and customers who swear that the morning is the ideal time to take their 100% Grass-Fed Bison Liver & Organ supplement. These folks typically take the supplement in the morning with coffee. Oftentimes, I hear that this is done prior to or during a fast (like intermittent fasting).

These people typically report that taking Paleo-Plex at this time reduces discomfort and hunger pains associated with fasting, while also enhancing and supporting energy levels. They typically report not feeling fatigued at the times they normally would, and can work for longer periods or in more stressful environments while feeling more resilient. Those all seem like great reasons to consume liver supplements in the AM!

2) The Afternoon

There are a plethora of benefits to taking Paleo-Plex or other beef/bison liver supplement pills in the afternoon. Typically, this is the time we feel most tired and fatigued—we’ve been working or child-caring, and running around or otherwise wearing ourselves down. That’s the perfect time for a power-up!

The energy support of Grass-Fed Bison Liver and Organ complex can be crucial during the afternoon slump. Additionally, since the supplement can be considered a food from a certain perspective, it could be the case that more of the nutritional components are absorbed when taken with or around meal times. So in the afternoon, when we’re eating or have had something to eat within the last couple hours, this can be an ideal time as it enhances nutrient absorption and can even have a synergistic effect with other foods we’re eating. So, there is good reason to take bison or beef liver supplements in the afternoon!

3) The evening

After a long or full day of work and effort, we need sustenance and recovery. Our bodies and brains have depleted nutrient stores and used what is available, and this can be an ideal time to re-stock our biological inventory with a grass-fed bison liver supplement.

Additionally, we are about to sleep at this time. It may sound crazy, but preparing for sleep as an activity in and of itself can dramatically improve sleep quality. When we sleep, our brains and bodies undergo massive recovery and rebuilding efforts. Our brain rewires itself and reinforces learning that occurred during the day, and our bodies replenish glycogen stores and rebuild muscle that may have been fatigued or otherwise depleted. Ensuring we have adequate nutrition is paramount to these metabolic processes unfolding optimally.

If you notice your sleep quality is inconsistent, it can be useful to address your nutrition as the first variable. Consuming collagen, raw honey, and/or 100% Grass-Fed & Finished Bison Liver & Organ supplements within a couple hours of bedtime can facilitate deep sleep states and leave us feeling more restored in the morning. It’s an amazing feeling to wake up feeling eager to get after the day—if you don’t know what I’m talking about, try liver & organs 30-120 minutes before bed.

4) Pre and/or post-workout

100% Grass-Fed & Finished Bison or Beef Liver is an ideal option as a pre or post-workout food or supplement. It can offer a natural boost of energy, reducing fatigue, while also supporting muscle growth and recovery post workout. Personally, I like to complete my workouts in a completely fasted state (this seems to have the most beneficial manipulation of mTOR, mammalian target of rapamycin), and then take Paleo-Plex with my post-workout meal (which is often grass-fed and finished bison muscle meat).

I find this gives me excellent recovery and muscle growth while reducing post-workout hunger pangs. Others like to take the supplement prior to working out, and experience greater output during their workouts because of the energy support.

5) Spread throughout the day

Another approach of timing these supplements is taking smaller doses at multiple times through the day. This can be tough to remember (especially if you’re taking multiple supplements).

However, if you’re diligent and keep on schedule, this might be the approach to have your (bison/beef)cake and eat it too. Having multiple doses of the supplement at varying times is likely to confer all of the benefits outlined above—the reader will likely experience less hunger during fasting, synergistic effects with nutrient uptake and absorption by taking the supplement with other foods, and is likely to experience reduced fatigue, enhanced energy, better sleep, and recovery. This is likely the approach that will garner the most diverse array of benefits.
